Meet Smoky — a rare and exceptionally soft sheepskin from the Portland breed of Dorset, England.

Portland sheep are an ancient British breed, traditionally associated with the Isle of Portland in Dorset. Their fleece is naturally fine, close and beautifully soft, making Portland sheepskin an especially lovely choice for those who appreciate a more refined, tactile wool.

Our Portland sheepskins are completely dye-free. The beautiful Smoky coloring comes naturally from the individual hide itself — and that means every piece is a little different.

Some are deeper and moodier. Others have softer grey, taupe, cream or smoky-brown nuances. You may notice subtle shifts in tone throughout the wool, creating a beautifully layered, almost misty effect.

There is no standard “Smoky” shade. Each sheepskin has its own character.

That is exactly what we love about them.

The wool is incredibly soft and wonderfully plush, with a fine texture that feels luxurious underfoot or against the skin.

The hides themselves are thin, supple and wonderfully bendable, making them particularly easy to style. Drape one casually over a chair, tuck it into the corner of a sofa, fold it over a bench, or slip it underneath a pile of pillows. They move with your furniture rather than simply sitting on top of it.

Portland is also a rare breed, with a long history in Dorset and a distinctive natural fleece that sets it apart from more common sheepskin varieties.

Minimally processed. Naturally beautiful.

These sheepskins are minimally processed to preserve their natural character. Because of this, the suede side may have slightly uneven or organically shaped edges. This is a natural characteristic of the hide, not a flaw — and part of what makes every piece individual.

Naturally Smoky. Completely unique.

No dye. No artificial color matching. No two pieces alike.

Just exceptionally soft Portland wool, naturally beautiful in all its smoky shades.

Please note: Because these sheepskins are completely natural and dye-free, color, shading and tonal variation will differ from piece to piece. Your sheepskin will be unique to itself.

If you’d like to choose your specific piece, simply reach out after you place an order and we’ll be happy to assist you personally. Otherwise, you can leave it to us and be delightfully surprised.

Shake and/or vacuum occasionally to remove dust and debris. In the event of a spill or stain, mix wool-specific detergent with warm water to produce foam. Using foam only (never soak or submerge sheepskin in water – it will harden the back suede), work the foam over the affected area and pat dry with a clean cloth. Shake and leave to dry, finish with a combing.
