FAQ

Sheepskin care?

Shake and/or vacuum occasionally to remove dust and debris. In the event
of a spill or stain, mix wool-specific detergent with warm water to produce
foam. Using foam only (never soak or submerge sheepskin in water – it will harden the back suede), work the foam over the affected area and pat dry with a clean cloth. Shake and leave to dry, finish with a combing.

Alternately, item can be dry cleaned.

Do not leave sheepskins on direct sunlight, it may result in colour change.

Are sheepskins hypoallergenic?

Sheepskins are considered hypoallergenic due to their
natural properties. They are resistant to dust mites, bacteria, and fungi,
which helps minimize allergens in your environment. Additionally, the lanolin
in sheepskin has natural antimicrobial properties that further reduce the risk
of allergens. This makes sheepskins a good option for those with sensitivities
or allergies.  Furthermore, wool has natural moisture-wicking properties, which helps to keep your skin dry and
comfortable.

Are your sheepskins and hides sustainable and eco-friendly?

Wool is not just a luxurious and comfortable option; it is
also an eco-friendly choice. As a renewable resource, wool is produced annually
by sheep, ensuring sustainability. Furthermore, wool is biodegradable,
decomposing naturally over time without harming the environment. Sheep graze on
natural grass, which supports healthy ecosystems. By choosing wool products,
you contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly industry and lower your carbon footprint.

Tanning of our hide products also meets strict environmental
regulations; our primary tannery operates under REACH protocols. REACH is a
regulation of the European Union, adopted to improve the protection of human
health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals. This
prohibits the use of harmful chemicals such as chromium, and sets strict guidelines for the capture and recycling of the chemicals required.

Are they only for colder climates/seasons?

No, sheepskins can and should be used in any climates and throughout all 4 seasons. They are known for its exceptional warmth, softness, and durability. Unlike synthetic
fibers, wool has the ability to regulate body temperature, keeping you warm in
cold weather and cool in hot weather. This is due to its natural crimp, which
creates air pockets that act as insulation.
For example, our sheepskin chair pads are a popular choice among travelers for car seat covers. They keep you warm in colder months and eliminates sweating in hot weather, ensuring comfort during long drives.

Are your hides ethically sourced?

Black Sheep (White Light) hold ourselves to a high ethical
standard in sourcing our animal products. Most crucially: no animal is
killed primarily for our products.
All of the hides that we sell are
bi-products of the meat industry, thus maximizing the utility of each animal
while reducing the potential waste associated with this primary usage.

We also concern ourselves with the quality of life the
animals have. For example: The Icelandic sheep are raised organically, using
traditional shepherding methods allowing them roam over the country’s wild and
lush hills and valleys throughout the summer months.

The reindeer hides are raised by the indigenous Lappish
peoples of Finland. This relationship dates back centuries, where the animals
have been farmed for their milk and meat, their hides used for clothing and
blankets to keep warm in the chilly northern winters.

Will it hold up over time?

Sheepskin is renowned for its durability and longevity, making it a worthwhile investment for various applications. Here’s why sheepskin stands
out:

Sheepskin fibers are naturally strong and elastic. This resilience helps the material retain its shape and structure even with regular use.

Sheepskin is resistant to wear and tear. Its dense, plush texture holds up well under frequent use, whether its used as a rug, chair pad or cover.

Proper care can extend the lifespan of sheepskin. Regular brushing and occasional professional cleaning helps keep fibers in top condition. preventing matting and wear.

The lanolin in sheepskin provides inherent protection against dirt and stains, making it easier to clean and maintain compare to some synthetic alternatives.

What is the history behind Icelandic Sheepskins?

The history of Icelandic sheepskins is deeply rooted in Iceland's cultural
and environmental context.

The use of sheepskin in Iceland dates back to the Viking Age, around the 9th
to 11th centuries. The Icelandic sheep, brought by the Norse settlers, were
valued for their wool and hides. These early settlers used sheepskins for
clothing, blankets, and shelter, adapting to the harsh Icelandic climate with
the warmth and durability of the wool.

In traditional Icelandic culture, sheepskin has long been integral to daily
life. Icelandic sheep are known for their unique dual-coated fleece, consisting
of a soft inner layer and a coarse outer layer. This combination provides
excellent insulation against the cold, making it ideal for traditional Icelandic garments like the lopapeysa (wool sweater) and for covering animals and providing warmth in homes.

Over time, the use of sheepskin evolved from purely functional to include
decorative and luxury applications. In modern Iceland, sheepskins are still
highly valued for their warmth and aesthetic appeal, and they are often used in
interior design and high-end products.
